Effective laboratory supervision is essential to maintaining patient safety, quality testing, regulatory compliance, staff competency, and a culture of continuous improvement. Laboratory supervisors serve as the critical connection between laboratory leadership, frontline personnel, quality systems, and patient care. Their responsibilities extend beyond assigning daily tasks to include communication, staff development, performance management, quality monitoring, safety, conflict resolution, and process improvement.
This one-hour continuing education course is designed to help laboratory personnel feel more confident and effective in their day-to-day roles. Supervising a laboratory is about much more than making schedules and assigning tasks. It’s about working with people, solving problems, supporting your team, and making sure quality and patient safety stay at the center of what you do.
Participants will explore practical ways to communicate clearly, delegate effectively, give meaningful feedback, recognize employees, and navigate difficult conversations. The course also looks at how to adjust your leadership (or future leadership) approach based on the needs and experience of your team members.
We’ll go through the everyday challenges supervisors face, including training and onboarding new employees, assessing competency, mentoring and coaching, building a strong team, managing conflict, listening to employee concerns, creating psychological safety, and keeping employees engaged. Participants will also learn how quality data, audits, performance measures, and other reports can help supervisors recognize trends, uncover problems, and make better decisions.
Other topics include laboratory safety and regulatory compliance, documentation and accountability, emotional intelligence, employee retention, technology, succession planning, sharing knowledge, and managing change. The course shows practical approaches that can help supervisors support their employees while also keeping the laboratory running safely, efficiently, and effectively.
Throughout the course, participants will work through real examples, knowledge checks, and common supervisory scenarios. The goal is to provide useful ideas and strategies that laboratory supervisors can take back to work and use right away to communicate better, support their teams, solve problems, and create a stronger laboratory environment.
