Customer Service and De-escalation in Patient Care

This course is a 1.0 CE asynchronous course designed for CPT, MLT, and MLS/CLS professionals involved in patient care, specimen collection, and laboratory operations. Although specimen collection is a routine technical procedure for laboratory professionals, it can be an unfamiliar, stressful, or uncomfortable experience for patients. Fear of needles, previous difficult collections, long wait times, uncertainty, pain, communication barriers, and concerns about medical testing may contribute to anxiety, frustration, or escalating behavior. This course explains how clear, respectful, and patient centered communication can support patient cooperation, safety, specimen quality, and a more effective collection experience.

The course provides practical strategies for recognizing anxiety, needle fear, vasovagal symptoms, and early signs of agitation or escalation. Learners will examine techniques for explaining procedures, setting realistic expectations, listening and acknowledging concerns, offering appropriate options, establishing professional boundaries, and determining when additional assistance is necessary. Through case studies and knowledge checks, learners will apply communication and de-escalation strategies to realistic specimen collection situations.
